No, but it's not like any of us care to know those more personal details anyway.
[ He, too, is silent for a couple of beats, turning around some thoughts that can't be helped when Joric speaks of future suffering. What a bleak outlook to have. But then again ... Yzak gets it. He was on that path, too, and he still is now. Again, since the one he wanted to take disappeared entirely. ]
He's decided to shoulder a great deal on his own. And while I can't say I agree with the particular decision to take the rest of the teams' memories, barring perhaps Emerton, and only perhaps ... I do understand his dedication for using his power for something greater than him and for the sake of a future where others won't need to experience what he has.
I can't speak for others' intentions or motives but I cannot see a reason why they wouldn't support each other at least for a mission's sake since we're all here for the same reason.
[ He makes a brief humming sound of acknowledgment. After a few of his memories were put on display for others to see his past, he's found he can speak of the event and no longer fear the consequences. ]
My brother died in battle. I volunteered for something I thought would help us end the war sooner and prevent other families from being torn apart. It did not go as planned.
[ At least for the mission's sake. He can agree on that much. After seeing many of these former crews' memories, though, and knowing how occasionally difficult it can be to put one's full trust in another ... he worries, sometimes.
Worries, but has no choice but to keep moving forward and simply hoping that won't be the case if something happened. ]
Things tend to not in a war. As unfortunate and bullshit as that is.
[ There's a pause, because as much as revealing this has lifted a weight off his shoulders it's still somewhat difficult to say the words. ]
There is a spell on me that makes me go into a rage. It was meant to lead to fiercer warriors, harder fought battles, and a faster end to the war. But instead it just causes me to lose control of myself. And a soldier who can't follow orders or see the difference between friend and foe is no good to anyone.
It's not magical in nature, but similar tactics via science have been done in my world. Occasionally, with similar outcomes where control is involved. So the concept isn't unfamiliar to me.
[ It honestly shouldn't be surprising that this occurs in other worlds too. ]
Unfortunately there are always people who think they can push the limits of what a body is meant to do.
[ A pause. ]
It is, but when I arrived I was assigned medicine to take that stops it from taking over. Once people started seeing my memories I knew it was for the best that I start to tell people. The crew doesn't need to deal with another monster like Kovacs was turned into.
Not when there aren't extended limits in place to be met.
[ Yzak can't exact disagree with the base concept of that sort of thing. He and his people exist because of the endeavors toward those goals - evolution, having those extended limits as a result of it. But much like magic, even science can go overboard with it to the detriment of people like Joric. Like the Combat Coordinators and the Extendeds that the Earth Alliance "created." ]
You've been here long enough, so I'm sure this is a stupid question. But in the event we become stuck on a mission for longer than expected or in another situation like the one we just got out of, do you have a backup plan if you happen to run out of that suppressant?
I'm assuming here that your intention isn't to turn on us or cause unneeded destruction on unimposing natives during a mission, and you don't seem like the kind of man who would hold a grudge if anybody had to use extreme measures to incapacitate you if something went awry.
But I have given it much thought and I was willing to have someone end me if it was the only way. However, recently I spoke to Andy about this and we came up with some ideas to better protect everyone from me. Mainly because there is nothing I could do to her that she couldn't recover from.
[ He scowls slightly - it can be heard in his voice. ] The only way - I'm sure there are plenty of alternatives to turn to before needing to resort to something like that.
[ The scowl and thus tone melts into something a little softer, concerned after that, when Joric brings up Andy. ] ... and I get why Andy would be someone to wish to turn to for something like that. But just because she can take something like that doesn't mean she should. [ To protect the team and thus ensure the mission isn't being impeded, he figures that's something she would more easily agree to, for the sake of her reason for being here. ] If she's truly fine with that backup plan, though, then there's at least something in place.
If she's not nearby, though?
I guess my ultimate question here is, what does this spell do to you physically? You're a human, right? Could a couple of bullets to the legs to stop you moving work, for example?
When you feel like a monster, you think of drastic measures before all others. But you can rest assured that Andy dissuaded me from my notions. And I would never have put this on her shoulders without warning. She came across the memory of the spell being put on me and volunteered to aid me.
[ He supposes - despite everything - it's a blessing that the magic didn't make him more than human. ]
Yes; still human. The spell takes over and I lose consciousness. I fight until my body cannot continue so damaging it enough would cause the spell to release me.
Maybe so. Not to mention, you're here for what I assume is an important reason, aren't you? You can't accomplish it if you're dead, so you - so everyone here - should take every care they can to ensure that doesn't happen.
Luckily there are plenty of ways to do that in your case, then. Not that I'm suggesting you tell everyone about this, that's your own prerogative. But, if we ever do end up in a situation where something could go wrong, you can also count on me, too, not to hesitate and chance it if you need a hand.
[ And by hand he means bullet. Sure he's a Coordinator but Joric is also huge and he's by no means invincible if he gets a good raging suckerpunch. ]
You're welcome. Even though it just seems like a natural thing to do, to me.
If I were in the same position, I'd be pissed off if someone hesitated and let me do something I'd regret when I was back to my senses. I'd want someone to kick my ass into incapacitation if the alternative was hurting anybody I cared about.
I would be understanding of hesitation, but not if they didn't follow through. I can agree with you on that one. Luckily I'm big enough to take a great deal of hits.

Yes, some memories weren't related to missions but rather the crew's personal time and I can see why people don't want to share that.
[ There's a pause before he hums to the positive. ]
They suffered a great deal, and it appears Degar will suffer more in the future.

All we can do is continue to support him and do our duty.

...
You made a similar choice?
